THE YEARS BETWEEN THE WARS
Under the Territorial Army and Militia Act 1921, the title of the Territorial Force was changed was changed to that of the Territorial Army, and since 1920 only those who are willing to accept liability to serve overseas have been enlisted, thus making the Territorial Army an Imperial Service Army. As soon as this policy was decided, a pamphlet on the re-organisation of the Territorial Force was circulated to all units affected. This set forth the new proposals, the reason for their adoption, the increased financial provisions to be made and the instructions regarding the free issue of uniform and equipment. It was a practical and logical scheme to provide the necessary Second Line to the Regular Forces on a voluntary basis. How different from the old regulations under which the original volunteers served. Far from getting anything free they had to pay for the privilege of serving in every way, even to the extent of purchasing the ball cartridges they fired. As the old lady remarked when asked if she liked the film Cleopatra “Yes, but how unlike the home life of our own dear Sovereigns.”
